Leela Wang is a Hamburg-based author, painter and artist, specialising in traditional Chinese painting, but also calligraphy and other art media. Born in Beijing, China, and having moved to Germany in 1998, her artworks not only focus on Chinese art, but also incorporate Western themes, exploring a fusion of multi-cultures.
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. The aim of the traditional Chinese painter is to capture not only the outer appearance of a subject but also its inner essence—its energy, life force and spirit. To accomplish this goal, distractions of colors are reduced. Instead, it relies on lines and precision—the calligraphic brush strokes shall bestow the paintings with rhythm and beauty. The use of lines and strokes is one of the major characteristics of Chinese painting, making it distinct from other painting traditions and cultures in the world.
